Nonneuronal expression of Rab3A: induction during adipogenesis and association with different intracellular membranes than Rab3D.

Rab3A is a small GTP-binding protein expressed predominantly in brain and neuroendocrine cells, in which it is associated with synaptic and synaptic-like vesicles, respectively. Here we report that adult mouse fat cells and 3T3-L1 adipocytes also express Rab3A mRNA and protein. They do not express synaptophysin, an abundant protein in synaptic vesicles or synaptic-like vesicles. The amount of R...

Targeting of the Synaptic Vesicle Protein Synaptobrevin in the Axon of Cultured Hippocampal Neurons: Evidence for Two Distinct Sorting Steps

Synaptic vesicles are concentrated in the distal axon, far from the site of protein synthesis. Integral membrane proteins destined for this organelle must therefore make complex targeting decisions. Short amino acid sequences have been shown to act as targeting signals directing proteins to a variety of intracellular locations. To identify synaptic vesicle targeting sequences and to follow the ...

A signaling organelle containing the nerve growth factor-activated receptor tyrosine kinase, TrkA.

The topology of signal transduction is particularly important for neurons. Neurotrophic factors such as nerve growth factor (NGF) interact with receptors at distal axons and a signal is transduced by retrograde transport to the cell body to ensure survival of the neuron. We have discovered an organelle that may account for the retrograde transport of the neurotrophin signal. This organelle is d...

Fast axonal transport of foreign synaptic vesicles in squid axoplasm

Translocation of intracellular organelles requires interaction with the cellular cytoskeleton, but the membrane and cytoskeletal proteins involved in movement are unknown. Here we show that highly purified synaptic vesicles from electric fish added to extruded squid axoplasm can show ATP-dependent movement. The movement is indistinguishable from that of endogenous vesicles and has a slight pref...

Specific association of the proto-oncogene product pp60c-src with an intracellular organelle, the PC12 synaptic vesicle

The protein product of the proto-oncogene c-src is a membrane-associated tyrosine kinase of unknown function. Identification of pp60c-src target membranes may elucidate the function of the c-src protein. The available evidence indicates that pp60c-src associates with distinct membranes within single cell types and has different distributions in different cell types. Our experiments demonstrate ...
